Narrative:
In cruise en route to 81J, without warning, #2 navigation communication crackled, followed by complete failure. Approximately 10 seconds later, #1 navigation communication crackled, also followed by a failure. Another 10 seconds (approximately) later, with no smoke, burning of wires was believed to be smelled. Circuit breakers for #1 and #2 navigation communications were pulled. Smell then ceased and continued to VFR destination airport at 7000 ft (cruising altitude), followed by an uneventful landing. 7600 and 7700 transponder codes were not used, no emergency declared, maintained XXXX squawk. I briefly had jack edwards (gulfshores airport) in sight through a break in overcast layer and attempted a descent to it, but quickly lost sight of the runway at which time, after a brief descent, climbed back to original cruising altitude of 7000 ft MSL and continued VFR to destin (81J) and landed without incident. Called eglin approach control by telephone to briefly explain and verify my safe arrival.

Title: LOST COM PROC NOT FOLLOWED.
Narrative: IN CRUISE ENRTE TO 81J, WITHOUT WARNING, #2 NAV COM CRACKLED, FOLLOWED BY COMPLETE FAILURE. APPROX 10 SECONDS LATER, #1 NAV COM CRACKLED, ALSO FOLLOWED BY A FAILURE. ANOTHER 10 SECONDS (APPROX) LATER, WITH NO SMOKE, BURNING OF WIRES WAS BELIEVED TO BE SMELLED. CIRCUIT BREAKERS FOR #1 AND #2 NAV COMS WERE PULLED. SMELL THEN CEASED AND CONTINUED TO VFR DEST ARPT AT 7000 FT (CRUISING ALT), FOLLOWED BY AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG. 7600 AND 7700 XPONDER CODES WERE NOT USED, NO EMER DECLARED, MAINTAINED XXXX SQUAWK. I BRIEFLY HAD JACK EDWARDS (GULFSHORES ARPT) IN SIGHT THROUGH A BREAK IN OVCST LAYER AND ATTEMPTED A DSCNT TO IT, BUT QUICKLY LOST SIGHT OF THE RWY AT WHICH TIME, AFTER A BRIEF DSCNT, CLBED BACK TO ORIGINAL CRUISING ALT OF 7000 FT MSL AND CONTINUED VFR TO DESTIN (81J) AND LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. CALLED EGLIN APCH CTL BY TELEPHONE TO BRIEFLY EXPLAIN AND VERIFY MY SAFE ARR.
