Narrative:
On a training flight, practicing VOR holds, I chose to hold over pomona VOR in VFR conditions. Morning marine layer was unusually high -- tops at about 5000 ft. After cancelling IFR, while VFR-on-top, ont approach terminated our radar service since we were above the arsa. After maneuvering, we proceeded to pomona VOR and practiced holds. The SID out of ont requires jets to cross pomona VOR at or below 8000 ft. At 6500 ft we encountered severe jets. Although we maintained visual separation, we came fairly close several times, at which point we called ont approach back and returned to base. I learned several lessons, but I don't believe ont approach should have been so eager to terminate our radar service when they knew we planned on maneuvering in the area at that altitude.

Title: INSTRUCTOR WITH PLT PRACTICING HOLDING OVER VOR ON DEP RTE HAS CLOSE PROX WITH SEVERAL ACRS.
Narrative: ON A TRAINING FLT, PRACTICING VOR HOLDS, I CHOSE TO HOLD OVER POMONA VOR IN VFR CONDITIONS. MORNING MARINE LAYER WAS UNUSUALLY HIGH -- TOPS AT ABOUT 5000 FT. AFTER CANCELLING IFR, WHILE VFR-ON-TOP, ONT APCH TERMINATED OUR RADAR SVC SINCE WE WERE ABOVE THE ARSA. AFTER MANEUVERING, WE PROCEEDED TO POMONA VOR AND PRACTICED HOLDS. THE SID OUT OF ONT REQUIRES JETS TO CROSS POMONA VOR AT OR BELOW 8000 FT. AT 6500 FT WE ENCOUNTERED SEVERE JETS. ALTHOUGH WE MAINTAINED VISUAL SEPARATION, WE CAME FAIRLY CLOSE SEVERAL TIMES, AT WHICH POINT WE CALLED ONT APCH BACK AND RETURNED TO BASE. I LEARNED SEVERAL LESSONS, BUT I DON'T BELIEVE ONT APCH SHOULD HAVE BEEN SO EAGER TO TERMINATE OUR RADAR SVC WHEN THEY KNEW WE PLANNED ON MANEUVERING IN THE AREA AT THAT ALT.
