Narrative:
Maintenance checked right engine for possible fuel leak, found one. Write-up was signed off by mechanic. In our haste to be on schedule, the walkaround was done in a hurry. Apparently one engine cowling was not secured properly. It departed the aircraft shortly after rotation. We returned for an uneventful landing. Too often pilots assume mechanics will complete their work, but sometimes mistakes are made. Pilots must thoroughly inspect all known work done on an aircraft.
