Narrative:
During flight from btv to swf we noticed that the altitude hold and altitude alert system were not functioning properly. We wrote up both system on landing at swf. The mechanic at swf reviewed the MEL and said the aircraft was grounded. I reviewed the MEL and concurred that the aircraft was grounded. The mechanic then called maintenance control in mem who overruled him and said it was ok to go. At this time, it was about 15 mins before scheduled pushback, so we rushed out the aircraft to make an on time departure. Upon arrival in mem, we were informed by flight control that the aircraft should have been grounded in swf. I had relied on the decision from mem maintenance control to move the aircraft. I assumed they had a basis for making an exception to the MEL for 1 flight to mem where the repairs could be made. At no time did I intentionally decide to move an aircraft that was or should have been legally grounded.

Title: FLC OF AN LGT ACR ACFT OPERATED THE ACFT WHEN IT DID NOT MEET AIRWORTHINESS REQUIREMENTS AND WAS CLASSIFIED AS GNDED.
Narrative: DURING FLT FROM BTV TO SWF WE NOTICED THAT THE ALT HOLD AND ALT ALERT SYS WERE NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. WE WROTE UP BOTH SYS ON LNDG AT SWF. THE MECH AT SWF REVIEWED THE MEL AND SAID THE ACFT WAS GNDED. I REVIEWED THE MEL AND CONCURRED THAT THE ACFT WAS GNDED. THE MECH THEN CALLED MAINT CTL IN MEM WHO OVERRULED HIM AND SAID IT WAS OK TO GO. AT THIS TIME, IT WAS ABOUT 15 MINS BEFORE SCHEDULED PUSHBACK, SO WE RUSHED OUT THE ACFT TO MAKE AN ON TIME DEP. UPON ARR IN MEM, WE WERE INFORMED BY FLT CTL THAT THE ACFT SHOULD HAVE BEEN GNDED IN SWF. I HAD RELIED ON THE DECISION FROM MEM MAINT CTL TO MOVE THE ACFT. I ASSUMED THEY HAD A BASIS FOR MAKING AN EXCEPTION TO THE MEL FOR 1 FLT TO MEM WHERE THE REPAIRS COULD BE MADE. AT NO TIME DID I INTENTIONALLY DECIDE TO MOVE AN ACFT THAT WAS OR SHOULD HAVE BEEN LEGALLY GNDED.
