Narrative:

We were air carrier flight from fll to mco. Ground control cleared us to taxi from terminal 1 to runway 9L without restrictions. We taxied via alpha taxiway. Immediately after crossing runway 13/31, I saw an small aircraft 'Y' on a collision course on taxiway D. I immediately applied the brakes at which time the pilot of the small aircraft must have seen us and applied his brakes. Neither he nor I was informed of the other. If not for the vigilance of either PIC this non-event could have been an accident. A possible cause of this near incident was a ground controller change. More vigilance is needed by ground controllers in fll. This could have been the second ground accident at fll involving our airline alone.
