Narrative:
Small transport instrument departure from midway for cps departed, climbed normally on course to 6000 ft, and was handed off to ZAU south departure. Approximately 20 mi southwest of midway airport, the center calls and says small transport must return. After receiving the aircraft, the pilot indicates he is in no difficulty, but must return for 'more work' (freight air taxi). The pilot turns on his own, and cancels IFR. The pilot calls back approximately 5 mins later requesting vectors to the nearest airport. I vectored him to jot airport. He was only 5 mi from it by this time. I lost radar and communication with small transport approximately 1 1/2 mi northeast of jot airport. State police informed ord TRACON that the small transport landed on a road due to dual engine failure. The pilot never communicated a need or problem except the last min request for 'vector to the nearest airport.' I believe the small transport received quality service, but deserved more attention and wish the pilot had shared the information of his impending problem sooner.

Title: ATX CARGO SMT HAD DUAL ENG FAILURE AND LANDED ON HWY.
Narrative: SMT INST DEP FROM MIDWAY FOR CPS DEPARTED, CLBED NORMALLY ON COURSE TO 6000 FT, AND WAS HANDED OFF TO ZAU S DEP. APPROX 20 MI SW OF MIDWAY ARPT, THE CTR CALLS AND SAYS SMT MUST RETURN. AFTER RECEIVING THE ACFT, THE PLT INDICATES HE IS IN NO DIFFICULTY, BUT MUST RETURN FOR 'MORE WORK' (FREIGHT AIR TAXI). THE PLT TURNS ON HIS OWN, AND CANCELS IFR. THE PLT CALLS BACK APPROX 5 MINS LATER REQUESTING VECTORS TO THE NEAREST ARPT. I VECTORED HIM TO JOT ARPT. HE WAS ONLY 5 MI FROM IT BY THIS TIME. I LOST RADAR AND COM WITH SMT APPROX 1 1/2 MI NE OF JOT ARPT. STATE POLICE INFORMED ORD TRACON THAT THE SMT LANDED ON A ROAD DUE TO DUAL ENG FAILURE. THE PLT NEVER COMMUNICATED A NEED OR PROB EXCEPT THE LAST MIN REQUEST FOR 'VECTOR TO THE NEAREST ARPT.' I BELIEVE THE SMT RECEIVED QUALITY SVC, BUT DESERVED MORE ATTN AND WISH THE PLT HAD SHARED THE INFO OF HIS IMPENDING PROB SOONER.
