Narrative:
I was flying the walet 7 arrival into mem and failed to turn to a 355 degree heading as depicted on arrival, at twikl intersection (mem 225/08). I realized this when approach controller turned me to a 345 degree heading at approximately 4.8 DME, and mentioned this turn was frequently missed particularly by pilots at my airline. He mentioned that had this been a high traffic period, there might have been a problem! I attribute this error mainly to pilot error in not carefully reading approach plate. Additionally, I failed to carefully read NOTAMS on my flight plan which called attention to the mem arrs and to carefully study them. Corrective action is to 'pay attention to details' and read all notes! The approach plate could be improved by deleting the segment from twikl intersection to mem (10-2C approach plate). However, closely reading approach plate does solve the same thing. There is no substitute for 'attention to detail.'
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR FLT FLYING THE WALET 7 STAR AT MEM MISSED THE TURN TO 355 DEGS AT TWIKL INTXN.
Narrative: I WAS FLYING THE WALET 7 ARR INTO MEM AND FAILED TO TURN TO A 355 DEG HDG AS DEPICTED ON ARR, AT TWIKL INTXN (MEM 225/08). I REALIZED THIS WHEN APCH CTLR TURNED ME TO A 345 DEG HDG AT APPROX 4.8 DME, AND MENTIONED THIS TURN WAS FREQUENTLY MISSED PARTICULARLY BY PLTS AT MY AIRLINE. HE MENTIONED THAT HAD THIS BEEN A HIGH TFC PERIOD, THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN A PROB! I ATTRIBUTE THIS ERROR MAINLY TO PLT ERROR IN NOT CAREFULLY READING APCH PLATE. ADDITIONALLY, I FAILED TO CAREFULLY READ NOTAMS ON MY FLT PLAN WHICH CALLED ATTN TO THE MEM ARRS AND TO CAREFULLY STUDY THEM. CORRECTIVE ACTION IS TO 'PAY ATTN TO DETAILS' AND READ ALL NOTES! THE APCH PLATE COULD BE IMPROVED BY DELETING THE SEGMENT FROM TWIKL INTXN TO MEM (10-2C APCH PLATE). HOWEVER, CLOSELY READING APCH PLATE DOES SOLVE THE SAME THING. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR 'ATTN TO DETAIL.'
