Narrative:
Captain and first officer were distracted by ground communications during final pushback preparations resulting in departure without pre departure clearance physically aboard aircraft, however, during standard instrument departure, the clearance routing was confirmed with ATC for first half of flight and thereafter for remainder of flight. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the flight crew had a release containing their flight plan route. The pre departure clearance had been issued by ATC -- the ticket agent had it and failed to forward it to the crew. The normal last min flurry of activity caused the flight crew to forget they had not received the pre departure clearance. Immediately after takeoff, flight crew confirmed their assigned SID and later confirmed their entire clearance via flight plan route. The frightening thing is that, if their route had been amended, the crew wouldn't know and ATC had no way of telling that. This is a gaping hole in the system.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC FORGOT THEIR PDC. LUCKILY THEIR ACTUAL CLRNC MATCHED THEIR FLT PLAN RTE.
Narrative: CAPT AND FO WERE DISTRACTED BY GND COMS DURING FINAL PUSHBACK PREPARATIONS RESULTING IN DEP WITHOUT PDC PHYSICALLY ABOARD ACFT, HOWEVER, DURING STANDARD INST DEP, THE CLRNC ROUTING WAS CONFIRMED WITH ATC FOR FIRST HALF OF FLT AND THEREAFTER FOR REMAINDER OF FLT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE FLC HAD A RELEASE CONTAINING THEIR FLT PLAN RTE. THE PDC HAD BEEN ISSUED BY ATC -- THE TICKET AGENT HAD IT AND FAILED TO FORWARD IT TO THE CREW. THE NORMAL LAST MIN FLURRY OF ACTIVITY CAUSED THE FLC TO FORGET THEY HAD NOT RECEIVED THE PDC. IMMEDIATELY AFTER TKOF, FLC CONFIRMED THEIR ASSIGNED SID AND LATER CONFIRMED THEIR ENTIRE CLRNC VIA FLT PLAN RTE. THE FRIGHTENING THING IS THAT, IF THEIR RTE HAD BEEN AMENDED, THE CREW WOULDN'T KNOW AND ATC HAD NO WAY OF TELLING THAT. THIS IS A GAPING HOLE IN THE SYS.
