Narrative:
On numerous occasions, when medium large transport type X aircraft are instructed to taxi into position and hold on runway 27R, we lose radio contact with them. This time it was an air carrier Y medium large transport type X. We routinely must walk across the tower and use the gonset back-up radio to communicate with such aircraft. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter states that this situation is a nuisance that slows down the acceptance rate at atl. Only one type of aircraft is involved, an medium large transport that sits lower to the ground than most other air carrier aircraft. The reporter was not aware that air carrier aircraft have upper and lower antennas. He had not complained to his supervisor about this problem. The reporter is involved in his union safety committee activities.

Title: AN ATL TWR CTLR RPTS THAT COM CAN BE DIFFICULT WITH CERTAIN MLG ACFT AT THE END OF RWY 27R.
Narrative: ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS, WHEN MLG TYPE X ACFT ARE INSTRUCTED TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD ON RWY 27R, WE LOSE RADIO CONTACT WITH THEM. THIS TIME IT WAS AN ACR Y MLG TYPE X. WE ROUTINELY MUST WALK ACROSS THE TWR AND USE THE GONSET BACK-UP RADIO TO COMMUNICATE WITH SUCH ACFT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATES THAT THIS SIT IS A NUISANCE THAT SLOWS DOWN THE ACCEPTANCE RATE AT ATL. ONLY ONE TYPE OF ACFT IS INVOLVED, AN MLG THAT SITS LOWER TO THE GND THAN MOST OTHER ACR ACFT. THE RPTR WAS NOT AWARE THAT ACR ACFT HAVE UPPER AND LOWER ANTENNAS. HE HAD NOT COMPLAINED TO HIS SUPVR ABOUT THIS PROB. THE RPTR IS INVOLVED IN HIS UNION SAFETY COMMITTEE ACTIVITIES.
