Narrative:
Took off and went into the northwest practice area, then went south and then tried to go back to airport by heading to the northeast. I tried to follow the VOR to get back. I got led far off and I believe VOR was malfunctioning. Marion tower tried to help me and told me to climb to get me on radar. They told me to climb to 6000 ft and squawk 7700, which I did, and circled where I was at until my instructor, flying another aircraft looking for me, found me and led me to marion airport.
