Narrative:
During departure and climb out while performing the meads 8 departure, departure control informed us we should be heading 060 instead of direct boulder VOR as directed by the meads 8 departure. There was no conflict with traffic and we turned to 060 heading as instructed. Upon re-examining the pre departure clearance at the bottom there was instructions to 'turn to 060 to meads 8.' to eliminate being missed by crews, this should be annotated in the clearance section higher up on the pre departure clearance. Also since 060 heading deletes part of the SID and its restrictions (turning 070 at 2 DME and direct bld above 4000 ft) clarification should be given as 'meads 8 except turn 060 after takeoff, then state the next expected restrictions.' it would be totally unclr to have instructions turn 060 then meads 8 without further explanation. So, 2 problems to correct is where changes are shown on pre departure clearance and then have changes clearly explained. ATC did not seem upset by our deviation and stated they have had problems with this before.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC MISREAD PDC. MISSED AMENDED PORTION OF SID. HDG DEV.
Narrative: DURING DEP AND CLBOUT WHILE PERFORMING THE MEADS 8 DEP, DEP CTL INFORMED US WE SHOULD BE HDG 060 INSTEAD OF DIRECT BOULDER VOR AS DIRECTED BY THE MEADS 8 DEP. THERE WAS NO CONFLICT WITH TFC AND WE TURNED TO 060 HDG AS INSTRUCTED. UPON RE-EXAMINING THE PDC AT THE BOTTOM THERE WAS INSTRUCTIONS TO 'TURN TO 060 TO MEADS 8.' TO ELIMINATE BEING MISSED BY CREWS, THIS SHOULD BE ANNOTATED IN THE CLRNC SECTION HIGHER UP ON THE PDC. ALSO SINCE 060 HDG DELETES PART OF THE SID AND ITS RESTRICTIONS (TURNING 070 AT 2 DME AND DIRECT BLD ABOVE 4000 FT) CLARIFICATION SHOULD BE GIVEN AS 'MEADS 8 EXCEPT TURN 060 AFTER TKOF, THEN STATE THE NEXT EXPECTED RESTRICTIONS.' IT WOULD BE TOTALLY UNCLR TO HAVE INSTRUCTIONS TURN 060 THEN MEADS 8 WITHOUT FURTHER EXPLANATION. SO, 2 PROBS TO CORRECT IS WHERE CHANGES ARE SHOWN ON PDC AND THEN HAVE CHANGES CLRLY EXPLAINED. ATC DID NOT SEEM UPSET BY OUR DEV AND STATED THEY HAVE HAD PROBS WITH THIS BEFORE.
