Narrative:

We were holding short of runway and the tower spoke to someone in spanish. The captain thought that the call was for us and that we were cleared into position and hold. He proceeded to taxi onto runway. I read back to the tower, into position and hold. As we taxied on runway, the tower advised to taxi clear of runway. The captain did not understand the clearance, said to tell the tower we were in position and holding. The tower confirmed and then later cleared us for takeoff. After takeoff, the tower advised us that we had not been cleared onto the runway and that an aircraft on final approach had been told to go around. I think that when I read back the clearance into position and hold, the tower understood holding position. I think this occurrence could have been avoided if we had clarified the clearance before taxiing onto the runway. I think most international towers do not use taxi into position and hold. They use hold position which means to stay where you are.

Title: FLC OF HVT 'ASSUMES' A CLRNC GIVEN IN SPANISH IS FOR THEM AND TAXIES INTO POS AND HOLD. ACFT ON FINAL FORCED TO GAR.

Narrative: WE WERE HOLDING SHORT OF RWY AND THE TWR SPOKE TO SOMEONE IN SPANISH. THE CAPT THOUGHT THAT THE CALL WAS FOR US AND THAT WE WERE CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD. HE PROCEEDED TO TAXI ONTO RWY. I READ BACK TO THE TWR, INTO POS AND HOLD. AS WE TAXIED ON RWY, THE TWR ADVISED TO TAXI CLR OF RWY. THE CAPT DID NOT UNDERSTAND THE CLRNC, SAID TO TELL THE TWR WE WERE IN POS AND HOLDING. THE TWR CONFIRMED AND THEN LATER CLRED US FOR TKOF. AFTER TKOF, THE TWR ADVISED US THAT WE HAD NOT BEEN CLRED ONTO THE RWY AND THAT AN ACFT ON FINAL APCH HAD BEEN TOLD TO GAR. I THINK THAT WHEN I READ BACK THE CLRNC INTO POS AND HOLD, THE TWR UNDERSTOOD HOLDING POS. I THINK THIS OCCURRENCE COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF WE HAD CLARIFIED THE CLRNC BEFORE TAXIING ONTO THE RWY. I THINK MOST INTL TWRS DO NOT USE TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD. THEY USE HOLD POS WHICH MEANS TO STAY WHERE YOU ARE.
