Narrative:
I contacted melbourne tower when 8.5 mi south of airport over the banana river. Instructions from melbourne tower were to contact them upon reaching melbourne causeway. At melbourne causeway I contacted the tower and was told to enter a left base for landing on runway 27L. A few moments later I was again contacted by melbourne tower and told to enter right downwind for landing on runway 4. I acknowledged instructions and then a few moments later contacted the tower upon entering right downwind and was cleared for #2 landing on runway 4. Final approach was normal, but due to gusting wind effect at touchdown, I elected to do a go around. I contacted the tower and informed them of go around and was told to stay in r-hand pattern for landing on runway 4 and to report turning base, which I did. My final approach was normal and I appeared to be lined properly with runway centerline and made corrections for crosswind landing. When the nosewheel touched down, the nose gear veered sharply to left and aircraft went off left side of runway onto grass and gravel. Aircraft damaged. No injuries.

Title: SMA LOSES ACFT CTL DURING XWIND LNDG.
Narrative: I CONTACTED MELBOURNE TWR WHEN 8.5 MI S OF ARPT OVER THE BANANA RIVER. INSTRUCTIONS FROM MELBOURNE TWR WERE TO CONTACT THEM UPON REACHING MELBOURNE CAUSEWAY. AT MELBOURNE CAUSEWAY I CONTACTED THE TWR AND WAS TOLD TO ENTER A L BASE FOR LNDG ON RWY 27L. A FEW MOMENTS LATER I WAS AGAIN CONTACTED BY MELBOURNE TWR AND TOLD TO ENTER R DOWNWIND FOR LNDG ON RWY 4. I ACKNOWLEDGED INSTRUCTIONS AND THEN A FEW MOMENTS LATER CONTACTED THE TWR UPON ENTERING R DOWNWIND AND WAS CLRED FOR #2 LNDG ON RWY 4. FINAL APCH WAS NORMAL, BUT DUE TO GUSTING WIND EFFECT AT TOUCHDOWN, I ELECTED TO DO A GAR. I CONTACTED THE TWR AND INFORMED THEM OF GAR AND WAS TOLD TO STAY IN R-HAND PATTERN FOR LNDG ON RWY 4 AND TO RPT TURNING BASE, WHICH I DID. MY FINAL APCH WAS NORMAL AND I APPEARED TO BE LINED PROPERLY WITH RWY CTRLINE AND MADE CORRECTIONS FOR XWIND LNDG. WHEN THE NOSEWHEEL TOUCHED DOWN, THE NOSE GEAR VEERED SHARPLY TO L AND ACFT WENT OFF L SIDE OF RWY ONTO GRASS AND GRAVEL. ACFT DAMAGED. NO INJURIES.
