Narrative:

Departed dca on runway 36 with clearance to turn left and intercept dca 328 degree radial. Due to distraction of having an inexperienced first officer and an FAA controller on jump seat, I failed to have 328 degree radial idented, only the FMC course from dca to ldn. Took off in WX and turned left to intercept dca- ldn course displayed on HSI. Originally cleared to 5000 ft, we were leveled by ATC at 4000 ft for traffic. We ended up due west of airport instead of tracking out on 328 degree radial. My distraction intolerance level has gone up considerably. Supplemental information from acn 259041: after takeoff the captain turned left and asked for LNAV. A few seconds later we received a TCASII alert and at the same time ATC told us to stop climbing and hold our altitude. The traffic passed above us and we continued with no other problems.

Title: CAPT OF AN LGT ACR ACFT FAILED TO TRACK ON ASSIGNED DEP RADIAL DUE TO MISSETTING THE FMC RESULTING IN ATC INTERVENTION TO LEVEL THE ACFT EARLY IN THE CLB FOR OTHER TFC TOGETHER WITH A TCASII ALERT.

WE ENDED UP DUE W OF ARPT INSTEAD OF TRACKING OUT ON 328 DEG RADIAL. MY DISTR INTOLERANCE LEVEL HAS GONE UP CONSIDERABLY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM ACN 259041: AFTER TKOF THE CAPT TURNED L AND ASKED FOR LNAV. A FEW SECONDS LATER WE RECEIVED A TCASII ALERT AND AT THE SAME TIME ATC TOLD US TO STOP CLBING AND HOLD OUR ALT. THE TFC PASSED ABOVE US AND WE CONTINUED WITH NO OTHER PROBS.
