Narrative:
We had just competed a CAT ii approach into iad and exited the 1R at E5. Visibility was horrendous. Tower told us to exit and report clear. We cleared the runway and wanted to taxi clear of the ILS zone also, if there was one. By the time we determined there was none, we were already on the parallel taxiway. During this time we tried to contact ground but he was very busy (even at 10 pm). He said there was opposite direction traffic that could cause a problem. But we never encountered him. We were finally cleared to the gate at that time. Next time I'll be more vigilant and be patient during periods of low visibility.
