Narrative:

While level at 14000 ft, we experienced a left main bus electrical failure. This results in loss of captain's eadi, ehsi, altimeter, autoplt, TCASII/transponder. Since I was the PNF, the first officer took control of the aircraft. While maintaining altitude, we both began to fixate on my electric altimeter, which read 14000 ft. During this time the left main would come back on for a while. Once settling down and resetting the autoplt and transponder, things would be back to normal. 1-2 mins later the scenario would begin again! The first officer, while hand flying, drifted up to approximately 14700 ft. ZID called us to verify that we were still level at 14000 ft. I informed him of our electrical problem and were descending to 14000 ft. TCASII showed no aircraft plus/minus 1000 ft within 15 mi of our aircraft. This is a good case of not minding the store. I should have made sure that the first officer was flying the aircraft, while I was trouble-shooting the problem.
