Narrative:
Air carrier X in position on runway 4L at ewr received clearance to takeoff. While applying takeoff power shortly after start of airplane movement, it became clear that an air carrier Y A-300 approaching runway 4L from the terminal, that is from our left, was not going to stop short of the runway but was about to taxi across the runway ahead of us. I closed the throttles immediately, prior to receipt of a new clearance from ewr tower to 'cancel takeoff clearance.' we were subsequently cleared to make a 180 degree turn on the runway at taxiway B and return to takeoff position. A new takeoff clearance was received shortly thereafter, and we were on our way to pbi. In a conversation with the tower supervisor by telephone the next morning, I learned that the air carrier Y A-300 had been cleared to cross the runway by ewr ground control. (Breakdown in communication.)
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B-727 ABORTS TKOF FOR A-300 XING ACTIVE RWY DOWNFIELD.
Narrative: ACR X IN POS ON RWY 4L AT EWR RECEIVED CLRNC TO TKOF. WHILE APPLYING TKOF PWR SHORTLY AFTER START OF AIRPLANE MOVEMENT, IT BECAME CLR THAT AN ACR Y A-300 APCHING RWY 4L FROM THE TERMINAL, THAT IS FROM OUR L, WAS NOT GOING TO STOP SHORT OF THE RWY BUT WAS ABOUT TO TAXI ACROSS THE RWY AHEAD OF US. I CLOSED THE THROTTLES IMMEDIATELY, PRIOR TO RECEIPT OF A NEW CLRNC FROM EWR TWR TO 'CANCEL TKOF CLRNC.' WE WERE SUBSEQUENTLY CLRED TO MAKE A 180 DEG TURN ON THE RWY AT TXWY B AND RETURN TO TKOF POS. A NEW TKOF CLRNC WAS RECEIVED SHORTLY THEREAFTER, AND WE WERE ON OUR WAY TO PBI. IN A CONVERSATION WITH THE TWR SUPVR BY TELEPHONE THE NEXT MORNING, I LEARNED THAT THE ACR Y A-300 HAD BEEN CLRED TO CROSS THE RWY BY EWR GND CTL. (BREAKDOWN IN COM.)
