Narrative:
Climbing VFR off lax on TC2 clearance 'turn northwest, climb to cruise altitude' (16500 ft). Through approximately 5000 ft, ATC instructed 'stop climb at 9000 ft for inbound traffic.' I acknowledged the 9000 ft instruction, but failed to put 9000 ft in the alerter. Through 9500 ft the captain said 'are we cleared to go up.' I looked at the alerter which still read 16500 ft and answered 'yes.' about the time we went through 10000 ft, the ATC specialist gave us an immediate descent back to 9000 ft to avoid a conflict with an inbound 747 airliner off our left side. We descended rapidly back to 9000 ft, but apparently set off the airliner's TCASII. Of course I apologized to ATC and they explained the problem for the airliner with the TCASII.

Title: A VFR CPR LTT CLBED THROUGH ITS ASSIGNED ALT. ALTDEV.
Narrative: CLBING VFR OFF LAX ON TC2 CLRNC 'TURN NW, CLB TO CRUISE ALT' (16500 FT). THROUGH APPROX 5000 FT, ATC INSTRUCTED 'STOP CLB AT 9000 FT FOR INBOUND TFC.' I ACKNOWLEDGED THE 9000 FT INSTRUCTION, BUT FAILED TO PUT 9000 FT IN THE ALERTER. THROUGH 9500 FT THE CAPT SAID 'ARE WE CLRED TO GO UP.' I LOOKED AT THE ALERTER WHICH STILL READ 16500 FT AND ANSWERED 'YES.' ABOUT THE TIME WE WENT THROUGH 10000 FT, THE ATC SPECIALIST GAVE US AN IMMEDIATE DSCNT BACK TO 9000 FT TO AVOID A CONFLICT WITH AN INBOUND 747 AIRLINER OFF OUR L SIDE. WE DSNDED RAPIDLY BACK TO 9000 FT, BUT APPARENTLY SET OFF THE AIRLINER'S TCASII. OF COURSE I APOLOGIZED TO ATC AND THEY EXPLAINED THE PROB FOR THE AIRLINER WITH THE TCASII.
