Narrative:
Takeoff behind 757, 757 was approximately 300-500 ft when we were given our takeoff clearance. We were given a 'caution wake turbulence' advisory. I told first officer to not rotate quickly and to watch for turbulence from the 757 as we were both given a turn to 010 degree after takeoff. The 757 began his turn immediately after takeoff and I told the first officer to delay the turn and to turn outside the 757's flight path. At 300 ft AGL on runway heading we encountered a wake turbulence which disturbed the airflow on our right wing and gave us a right rolling moment which took a moderate control input to correct. Encounter lasted 2-3 seconds. This is my 4TH encounter behind a 757 (all in MD80's). The FAA should provide increased separation behind this aircraft -- especially during takeoff.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD-80 ENCOUNTERED WAKE TURB BEHIND A B-757.
Narrative: TKOF BEHIND 757, 757 WAS APPROX 300-500 FT WHEN WE WERE GIVEN OUR TKOF CLRNC. WE WERE GIVEN A 'CAUTION WAKE TURB' ADVISORY. I TOLD FO TO NOT ROTATE QUICKLY AND TO WATCH FOR TURB FROM THE 757 AS WE WERE BOTH GIVEN A TURN TO 010 DEG AFTER TKOF. THE 757 BEGAN HIS TURN IMMEDIATELY AFTER TKOF AND I TOLD THE FO TO DELAY THE TURN AND TO TURN OUTSIDE THE 757'S FLT PATH. AT 300 FT AGL ON RWY HDG WE ENCOUNTERED A WAKE TURB WHICH DISTURBED THE AIRFLOW ON OUR R WING AND GAVE US A R ROLLING MOMENT WHICH TOOK A MODERATE CTL INPUT TO CORRECT. ENCOUNTER LASTED 2-3 SECONDS. THIS IS MY 4TH ENCOUNTER BEHIND A 757 (ALL IN MD80'S). THE FAA SHOULD PROVIDE INCREASED SEPARATION BEHIND THIS ACFT -- ESPECIALLY DURING TKOF.
