Narrative:
We were cleared for an immediate takeoff on runway 30R and told to keep preceding departure in sight. I acknowledged the takeoff clearance and started advancing power and rolling. The captain didn't catch the takeoff clearance so he asked the tower to confirm it as we continued the takeoff process. His request for confirmation gave the tower the impression we weren't on the roll so they told us to cancel our takeoff clearance. We aborted the takeoff and when we questioned the controller she said the cancellation was because we didn't follow her instructions. If the controller would have looked at us, she would have seen that we were complying. We were taking off but merely asking for confirmation of clearance. This entire situation caused the airplane that was landing after we were to takeoff to have to do a go around.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: WHEN FLC RECONFIRMED THAT THEY WERE CLRED FOR TKOF WHILE ON THE TKOF ROLL, CTLR ISSUED ABORT INSTRUCTIONS DUE TO ANOTHER ACFT ON SHORT FINAL.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED FOR AN IMMEDIATE TKOF ON RWY 30R AND TOLD TO KEEP PRECEDING DEP IN SIGHT. I ACKNOWLEDGED THE TKOF CLRNC AND STARTED ADVANCING PWR AND ROLLING. THE CAPT DIDN'T CATCH THE TKOF CLRNC SO HE ASKED THE TWR TO CONFIRM IT AS WE CONTINUED THE TKOF PROCESS. HIS REQUEST FOR CONFIRMATION GAVE THE TWR THE IMPRESSION WE WEREN'T ON THE ROLL SO THEY TOLD US TO CANCEL OUR TKOF CLRNC. WE ABORTED THE TKOF AND WHEN WE QUESTIONED THE CTLR SHE SAID THE CANCELLATION WAS BECAUSE WE DIDN'T FOLLOW HER INSTRUCTIONS. IF THE CTLR WOULD HAVE LOOKED AT US, SHE WOULD HAVE SEEN THAT WE WERE COMPLYING. WE WERE TAKING OFF BUT MERELY ASKING FOR CONFIRMATION OF CLRNC. THIS ENTIRE SIT CAUSED THE AIRPLANE THAT WAS LNDG AFTER WE WERE TO TKOF TO HAVE TO DO A GAR.
