Narrative:
I was flying a visual approach on a right base to final to runway 24R at lax. Had visual on an air carrier airbus 320 (he was for runway 24L at lax) and was maintaining visual separation, in a 10 degree bank, when I realized I had misjudged the rate of closure and increased to 20-25 degree bank to maintain adequate separation. This happened between 7-5 mi final. At a 2 mi final air carrier airbus reported to tower that they had had to alter course to keep separation from us. The captain and I feel we maintained adequate separation and didn't see him alter course and if he did it was probably because of his TCASII. However, all pilots seem to perceive distances differently. We feel as if we were never more than 800 ft from him and always above him. I feel the workload at that point contributed to our getting closer than we had planned. I also feel as though I was watching the airbus so much that I didn't look at the airport/runway alignment well enough. Parallel approachs should not be done 'along side' other aircraft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: TRACK DEV INTRUDED ON ADJACENT APCH.
Narrative: I WAS FLYING A VISUAL APCH ON A R BASE TO FINAL TO RWY 24R AT LAX. HAD VISUAL ON AN ACR AIRBUS 320 (HE WAS FOR RWY 24L AT LAX) AND WAS MAINTAINING VISUAL SEPARATION, IN A 10 DEG BANK, WHEN I REALIZED I HAD MISJUDGED THE RATE OF CLOSURE AND INCREASED TO 20-25 DEG BANK TO MAINTAIN ADEQUATE SEPARATION. THIS HAPPENED BTWN 7-5 MI FINAL. AT A 2 MI FINAL ACR AIRBUS RPTED TO TWR THAT THEY HAD HAD TO ALTER COURSE TO KEEP SEPARATION FROM US. THE CAPT AND I FEEL WE MAINTAINED ADEQUATE SEPARATION AND DIDN'T SEE HIM ALTER COURSE AND IF HE DID IT WAS PROBABLY BECAUSE OF HIS TCASII. HOWEVER, ALL PLTS SEEM TO PERCEIVE DISTANCES DIFFERENTLY. WE FEEL AS IF WE WERE NEVER MORE THAN 800 FT FROM HIM AND ALWAYS ABOVE HIM. I FEEL THE WORKLOAD AT THAT POINT CONTRIBUTED TO OUR GETTING CLOSER THAN WE HAD PLANNED. I ALSO FEEL AS THOUGH I WAS WATCHING THE AIRBUS SO MUCH THAT I DIDN'T LOOK AT THE ARPT/RWY ALIGNMENT WELL ENOUGH. PARALLEL APCHS SHOULD NOT BE DONE 'ALONG SIDE' OTHER ACFT.
