Narrative:

Taxied to gate interruption by flight attendant. Short connect time, ambiguous procedures caused us to leave the right engine running. We remembered it as we walked down hallway. Too much is asked of flight crew's at a few different times when one is deplaning. Air carrier has a procedure to not shut the engine down until ground power is connected to aircraft. They also have a practice of saying goodbye to the passenger by the pilot who flew the leg. I did all the checklist and told the captain they were slow getting the power on and I would be saying goodbye to the passenger. He acknowledged. When he left, he shut off the rotating beacon and released the parking brake, but failed to shut off the engine.
