Narrative:

While attempting a soft field takeoff, the student drifted left of center. I grabbed the controls in order to correct the situation. We got back on the centerline and continued the departure, with no apparent problems. All seemed fine! Upon landing at columbia, sc, someone at FBO noticed a dent in the elevator. We assume we hit a runway light or bird. The soft field takeoff was attempted because upon landing at beckley, wv, we noticed a rough shake in the nose. The student was paying more attention to the nose than monitoring the centerline. We later found out that the shimmy damper rod broke causing the shake.
