Narrative:
Landing on runway 30, hodges air park, slight crosswind from left. At time of flare, a gust of wind from the left caused left wing to rise. Pilot corrected with aileron to lower left wing and aircraft landed on left wheel followed by right gear and nosewheel. Aircraft was tracking to the left of centerline on narrow grass runway. Pilot added power but could not straighten aircraft before landing gear struck a drainage ditch perpendicular to the runway. Aircraft twisted clockwise on landing gear, damaging landing gear, wing tips, and propeller. Although the landing approach seemed normal, and very little crosswind correction was needed, pilot should have kept approach speed higher than normal in anticipation of gusty wind and landed long. The drainage ditch is approximately 300- 400 ft from approach end of runway. The ditch is the narrowest section of the grass runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACFT DAMAGED IN LNDG PROC XWIND LNDG.
Narrative: LNDG ON RWY 30, HODGES AIR PARK, SLIGHT XWIND FROM L. AT TIME OF FLARE, A GUST OF WIND FROM THE L CAUSED L WING TO RISE. PLT CORRECTED WITH AILERON TO LOWER L WING AND ACFT LANDED ON L WHEEL FOLLOWED BY R GEAR AND NOSEWHEEL. ACFT WAS TRACKING TO THE L OF CTRLINE ON NARROW GRASS RWY. PLT ADDED PWR BUT COULD NOT STRAIGHTEN ACFT BEFORE LNDG GEAR STRUCK A DRAINAGE DITCH PERPENDICULAR TO THE RWY. ACFT TWISTED CLOCKWISE ON LNDG GEAR, DAMAGING LNDG GEAR, WING TIPS, AND PROP. ALTHOUGH THE LNDG APCH SEEMED NORMAL, AND VERY LITTLE XWIND CORRECTION WAS NEEDED, PLT SHOULD HAVE KEPT APCH SPD HIGHER THAN NORMAL IN ANTICIPATION OF GUSTY WIND AND LANDED LONG. THE DRAINAGE DITCH IS APPROX 300- 400 FT FROM APCH END OF RWY. THE DITCH IS THE NARROWEST SECTION OF THE GRASS RWY.
