Narrative:

During the cockpit preparation prior to flight, the first officer advised me that we had not been fueled. The first officer made this discovery while initializing the ACARS. I requested that he call the company and request that the aircraft be fueled. We subsequently proceeded to complete the receiving and before start checklists, noting that we would come back to the fuel. We pushed back and taxied out toward runway 18R. While performing the before takeoff checklist, we discovered that we had not been fueled. In order that there could be no possible compromise of safety, I requested a clearance back to the gate. Upon arriving at the gate and securing the aircraft, I went to the jetway telephone and called for the aircraft to be fueled. I then called the chief pilot's office and explained what had taken place.
