Narrative:
We were cleared into position to hold for takeoff on runway 9L at O'hare. A 737 was cleared to land on runway 14L and told to hold short of runway 9L for departing traffic. The 737 replied 'unable to hold short of runway 9L.' the tower cleared us for takeoff. I was working the radio and said 'she said she couldn't hold short.' the tower said 'that's not what she said.' 737 was now down and rolling out and came on the radio and said they could now hold short. The captain on our plane, who was the PF, advanced the power for takeoff and released brakes. I didn't like the entire situation of bad radio calls, intersecting runway operations, and low visibility so I queried the tower whether we were still cleared for takeoff. They said 'no, traffic on short final for runway 14L, hold in position.' we stopped. In my opinion, tower totally blew the whole sequence of calls. When I caught the first mistake, they should've confirmed the 737 response instead of arguing with me, and when the confusion continued they should've canceled our takeoff clearance -- she forgot about us.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LGT IS CLRED FOR TKOF AFTER FLC OF TFC LNDG ON INTERSECTING RWY ALLEGEDLY ADVISED THAT THEY COULD NOT HOLD SHORT OF AN INTERSECTING RWY. LGT ABORTED RESULTING IN NO LOSS OF STANDARD SEPARATION.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED INTO POS TO HOLD FOR TKOF ON RWY 9L AT O'HARE. A 737 WAS CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 14L AND TOLD TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 9L FOR DEPARTING TFC. THE 737 REPLIED 'UNABLE TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 9L.' THE TWR CLRED US FOR TKOF. I WAS WORKING THE RADIO AND SAID 'SHE SAID SHE COULDN'T HOLD SHORT.' THE TWR SAID 'THAT'S NOT WHAT SHE SAID.' 737 WAS NOW DOWN AND ROLLING OUT AND CAME ON THE RADIO AND SAID THEY COULD NOW HOLD SHORT. THE CAPT ON OUR PLANE, WHO WAS THE PF, ADVANCED THE PWR FOR TKOF AND RELEASED BRAKES. I DIDN'T LIKE THE ENTIRE SIT OF BAD RADIO CALLS, INTERSECTING RWY OPS, AND LOW VISIBILITY SO I QUERIED THE TWR WHETHER WE WERE STILL CLRED FOR TKOF. THEY SAID 'NO, TFC ON SHORT FINAL FOR RWY 14L, HOLD IN POS.' WE STOPPED. IN MY OPINION, TWR TOTALLY BLEW THE WHOLE SEQUENCE OF CALLS. WHEN I CAUGHT THE FIRST MISTAKE, THEY SHOULD'VE CONFIRMED THE 737 RESPONSE INSTEAD OF ARGUING WITH ME, AND WHEN THE CONFUSION CONTINUED THEY SHOULD'VE CANCELED OUR TKOF CLRNC -- SHE FORGOT ABOUT US.
