Narrative:
Encountered severe turbulence. To avoid aircraft damage and passenger injury declared emergency, turned 90 degrees to the right of track R577 (hnl-lax) and paralleled track to 20 mi south. With request for FL260 on file. Advised other aircraft on VHF 121.5 that we could no longer maintain altitude and intended to vacate FL320 for FL260. Contacted sf radio and received ATC clearance to maintain FL260 and proceed on course. Rest of flight proceeded uneventfully.
