Narrative:
Special procedures are used for pushing back at iad's gates. Note: (we were monitoring ground all during pushback). While coordinating with pushback crew and flight attendant I received clearance from ground pertaining to pushback clearance. I believe I (first officer) made a mistake after the fact. I thought we were cleared for pushback but according to ground was instructed to hold the push. We pushed back. Ground told us about our (my) error but it was 'no problem.' in the future I will be more careful to communication and follow instruction on pushback. If I was instructed (not sure) to hold the push then the distrs (special procedures) may have been my problem.

Title: PREMATURE PUSHBACK IN NON ADHERENCE TO ATC CLRNC INSTRUCTION.
Narrative: SPECIAL PROCS ARE USED FOR PUSHING BACK AT IAD'S GATES. NOTE: (WE WERE MONITORING GND ALL DURING PUSHBACK). WHILE COORDINATING WITH PUSHBACK CREW AND FLT ATTENDANT I RECEIVED CLRNC FROM GND PERTAINING TO PUSHBACK CLRNC. I BELIEVE I (FO) MADE A MISTAKE AFTER THE FACT. I THOUGHT WE WERE CLRED FOR PUSHBACK BUT ACCORDING TO GND WAS INSTRUCTED TO HOLD THE PUSH. WE PUSHED BACK. GND TOLD US ABOUT OUR (MY) ERROR BUT IT WAS 'NO PROB.' IN THE FUTURE I WILL BE MORE CAREFUL TO COM AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTION ON PUSHBACK. IF I WAS INSTRUCTED (NOT SURE) TO HOLD THE PUSH THEN THE DISTRS (SPECIAL PROCS) MAY HAVE BEEN MY PROB.
