Narrative:
Departed lax runway 7L heading 070 degrees, followed by 2 or 3 controller assigned heading changes to join sli 080 degree radial. Recalled that 1 of the heading changes had been to 110 degrees. Don't recall sequence of heading assignments. Incident occurred during IFR climb. TCASII placarded inoperative. Heavy aircraft, slow clber. Recollect what seemed as poor intercept to capture sli 080 degree radial. Subsequent frequency change and new heading assignment occurred as I was about to make inquiry of our intercept. LNAV engaged during departure climb sequence of heading and altitude assignments. Don't recall when LNAV capture actually occurred. No recollection of any TA's or sense or urgency from controllers during radio communication. Did not learn of deviation/conflict until after arrival iad when requested to contact socal TRACON. Upon return lax, I viewed radar track and concluded left turn into conflict area did occur, although confident turn was commanded by flight director. Don't know what erroneous CDU/navigation inputs may have caused any deviation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LGT DEPARTS WITH INOP TCASII. HAS LTSS DUE TO HDG DEV.
Narrative: DEPARTED LAX RWY 7L HDG 070 DEGS, FOLLOWED BY 2 OR 3 CTLR ASSIGNED HDG CHANGES TO JOIN SLI 080 DEG RADIAL. RECALLED THAT 1 OF THE HDG CHANGES HAD BEEN TO 110 DEGS. DON'T RECALL SEQUENCE OF HDG ASSIGNMENTS. INCIDENT OCCURRED DURING IFR CLB. TCASII PLACARDED INOP. HVY ACFT, SLOW CLBER. RECOLLECT WHAT SEEMED AS POOR INTERCEPT TO CAPTURE SLI 080 DEG RADIAL. SUBSEQUENT FREQ CHANGE AND NEW HDG ASSIGNMENT OCCURRED AS I WAS ABOUT TO MAKE INQUIRY OF OUR INTERCEPT. LNAV ENGAGED DURING DEP CLB SEQUENCE OF HDG AND ALT ASSIGNMENTS. DON'T RECALL WHEN LNAV CAPTURE ACTUALLY OCCURRED. NO RECOLLECTION OF ANY TA'S OR SENSE OR URGENCY FROM CTLRS DURING RADIO COM. DID NOT LEARN OF DEV/CONFLICT UNTIL AFTER ARR IAD WHEN REQUESTED TO CONTACT SOCAL TRACON. UPON RETURN LAX, I VIEWED RADAR TRACK AND CONCLUDED L TURN INTO CONFLICT AREA DID OCCUR, ALTHOUGH CONFIDENT TURN WAS COMMANDED BY FLT DIRECTOR. DON'T KNOW WHAT ERRONEOUS CDU/NAV INPUTS MAY HAVE CAUSED ANY DEV.
