Narrative:
Upon being cleared for a visual approach to runway 36L at dfw in VMC conditions, the first officer was flying as we quickly descended for a short final. As we completed the turn to final from a 150 degree heading, I missed the centerline of runway 36L and started to line up on runway 35L. At this point, both TCASII and approach warned us of a target confirmed by both sources and visually to be 600 ft low and to our right. Approach control immediately issued a command to return to the runway 36L visual and we were to level at 3500 ft. We were resequenced for a left traffic and a normal landing on runway 36L. No other conflicts were observed and ATC indicated the same. Supplemental information from acn 293209: the first officer was the PF as we quickly descended in left traffic from the radar vector. As we completed the turn to final approach after I had confirmed the airport view and his chance of completing the approach. His cockpit view was obscured enough for him to miss the centerline of runway 36L and mistake the east side runways for his target.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: RPTR OVERSHOT RWY ON TURN TO FINAL AND DRIFTED INTO ADJACENT RWY TFC.
Narrative: UPON BEING CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 36L AT DFW IN VMC CONDITIONS, THE FO WAS FLYING AS WE QUICKLY DSNDED FOR A SHORT FINAL. AS WE COMPLETED THE TURN TO FINAL FROM A 150 DEG HDG, I MISSED THE CTRLINE OF RWY 36L AND STARTED TO LINE UP ON RWY 35L. AT THIS POINT, BOTH TCASII AND APCH WARNED US OF A TARGET CONFIRMED BY BOTH SOURCES AND VISUALLY TO BE 600 FT LOW AND TO OUR R. APCH CTL IMMEDIATELY ISSUED A COMMAND TO RETURN TO THE RWY 36L VISUAL AND WE WERE TO LEVEL AT 3500 FT. WE WERE RESEQUENCED FOR A L TFC AND A NORMAL LNDG ON RWY 36L. NO OTHER CONFLICTS WERE OBSERVED AND ATC INDICATED THE SAME. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 293209: THE FO WAS THE PF AS WE QUICKLY DSNDED IN L TFC FROM THE RADAR VECTOR. AS WE COMPLETED THE TURN TO FINAL APCH AFTER I HAD CONFIRMED THE ARPT VIEW AND HIS CHANCE OF COMPLETING THE APCH. HIS COCKPIT VIEW WAS OBSCURED ENOUGH FOR HIM TO MISS THE CTRLINE OF RWY 36L AND MISTAKE THE E SIDE RWYS FOR HIS TARGET.
