Narrative:

This was the first time I used the loose-leaf government charts. After picking the plate for VOR a to 7d2, somehow I flipped chart over when I put it into the clipboard, which is the approach for oakland big beaver, not oakland troy. The 2 approachs are very similar, both off the pontiac VOR and using DME stepdowns. I was established on the approach I was looking at when dtw approach asked me what heading I was using and I replied '117 degrees.' he said it should be 124 degrees, at which time I noticed my mistake. He canceled my approach clearance and vectored me back for another try, which was successful. In the future, I will triple-check everything, including the airport, not just the approach type.

Title: PLT FLEW APCH FOR ANOTHER ARPT THAN THAT FOR WHICH HE WAS CLRED.

Narrative: THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I USED THE LOOSE-LEAF GOV CHARTS. AFTER PICKING THE PLATE FOR VOR A TO 7D2, SOMEHOW I FLIPPED CHART OVER WHEN I PUT IT INTO THE CLIPBOARD, WHICH IS THE APCH FOR OAKLAND BIG BEAVER, NOT OAKLAND TROY. THE 2 APCHS ARE VERY SIMILAR, BOTH OFF THE PONTIAC VOR AND USING DME STEPDOWNS. I WAS ESTABLISHED ON THE APCH I WAS LOOKING AT WHEN DTW APCH ASKED ME WHAT HDG I WAS USING AND I REPLIED '117 DEGS.' HE SAID IT SHOULD BE 124 DEGS, AT WHICH TIME I NOTICED MY MISTAKE. HE CANCELED MY APCH CLRNC AND VECTORED ME BACK FOR ANOTHER TRY, WHICH WAS SUCCESSFUL. IN THE FUTURE, I WILL TRIPLE-CHK EVERYTHING, INCLUDING THE ARPT, NOT JUST THE APCH TYPE.
