Narrative:
Did not receive dispatch paperwork until passenger were loaded and door closed. Completed before start checklist and advised push crew 'ready for pushback.' as I went through the reams of paperwork for our international release, I neglected to check and see if pushback clearance was required at our gate. It was. Upon disconnecting ATC ground advised us we had pushed onto an active taxiway and to return to the gate. Although safety was not compromised, we did momentarily stop traffic.
