Narrative:
Md-80 during climb left engine N1 high with throttle split. Approximately 30400 ft loud bang and compressor stall on left engine. It was shutdown with all checklists completed. Flight diverted to dtw because WX and facilities were better than destination airport. Landing uneventful, stopped aircraft off runway, emergency equipment crew checked aircraft for damage and aircraft taxied to gate. Coordination was excellent throughout, crew, ATC and dtw ground crew.
