Narrative:
We were at FL280, 80 southwest of the flo (florence) VOR. ZJX gave us a clearance to cross 40 mi out of flo at FL240. Captain (PF) set FL240 in altitude selector. At about 60 mi out, I (first officer, PNF) called 20 mi to cross point. Captain started a descent on autoplt. About this time a flight attendant came up to ask us to cool the cabin. I was adjusting the temperature and did not notice our descent rate. At the 40 mi DME point we were descending through about 25500 ft. I called this to attention of the captain (PF) and he expedited to, FL240. At this time jax center called and gave us a new clearance to cross 40 mi out of chesterfield VOR at FL240. The captain (PF) had the flo VOR selected and I (first officer) had chesterfield VOR selected as our next fix. Captain had evidently looked at wrong DME. Slow descent and distraction I feel contributed to this problem. No aircraft observed on TCASII, controller did not report conflict. Flight proceeded normally.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF AN MLG FAILED TO DSND TO A XING RESTR ALT DUE TO LOOKING AT THE WRONG DME INDICATION.
Narrative: WE WERE AT FL280, 80 SW OF THE FLO (FLORENCE) VOR. ZJX GAVE US A CLRNC TO CROSS 40 MI OUT OF FLO AT FL240. CAPT (PF) SET FL240 IN ALT SELECTOR. AT ABOUT 60 MI OUT, I (FO, PNF) CALLED 20 MI TO CROSS POINT. CAPT STARTED A DSCNT ON AUTOPLT. ABOUT THIS TIME A FLT ATTENDANT CAME UP TO ASK US TO COOL THE CABIN. I WAS ADJUSTING THE TEMP AND DID NOT NOTICE OUR DSCNT RATE. AT THE 40 MI DME POINT WE WERE DSNDING THROUGH ABOUT 25500 FT. I CALLED THIS TO ATTN OF THE CAPT (PF) AND HE EXPEDITED TO, FL240. AT THIS TIME JAX CTR CALLED AND GAVE US A NEW CLRNC TO CROSS 40 MI OUT OF CHESTERFIELD VOR AT FL240. THE CAPT (PF) HAD THE FLO VOR SELECTED AND I (FO) HAD CHESTERFIELD VOR SELECTED AS OUR NEXT FIX. CAPT HAD EVIDENTLY LOOKED AT WRONG DME. SLOW DSCNT AND DISTR I FEEL CONTRIBUTED TO THIS PROB. NO ACFT OBSERVED ON TCASII, CTLR DID NOT RPT CONFLICT. FLT PROCEEDED NORMALLY.
