Narrative:
On taxi out in oma, I discovered that I'd be 300 pounds overweight for landing at ord. I reasoned that since the trip was from oma to ord that we'd easily go enough over planned burnout to bring us below the maximum structural landing weight of 154500 pounds. Unfortunately we were given 'directs' and were vectored straight-in to runway 14R and consequently landed 700 pounds overweight. I notified maintenance and dispatch and had it written up in the log. I should have called dispatch at oma to decide early on that I would have been ok to go ahead and launch for ord given that the dispatcher and I would have both been in agreement to continue, rather than to have just made that call on my own. After talking to the dispatcher at ord (after landing) he agreed that he would've ok'ed the trip to continue as well, but it would've been better for me to have called him from oma first. Our weight was 'good' down in operations, mind you, but 'went up' after we had begun our taxi out. Next time, I'll be sure to call.
