Narrative:
I asked for progressive taxi instructions at new, la, after run-up. Ground control told me to taxi 'straight north' which would lead me to the departure end of runway 9. I taxied 360 degrees as per directional gyroscope indications and ended up midway down runway 9 on the taxiway. (I was on the appropriate side of the hold short marker and no runway excursion occurred.) the ground controllers had me back taxi on runway 9 to the departure end. The reason that I did not end up initially at the takeoff end of runway 9 was because I did not reset my directional gyroscope during runup and was approximately 70 degrees off the correct course while taxiing. Before back- taxiing, I did reset my directional gyroscope to compass indications.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DEV FROM CLRNC RTE. PLT WAS ATTEMPTING TO USE HIS DIRECTIONAL GYROSCOPE TO NAV TO THE DEP END OF THE RWY WHILE ON THE GND, BUT HE HAD FORGOTTEN TO RESET IT DURING HIS PREFLT. RESULT? HE MISSED HIS RWY AND HAD TO BE GIVEN A PROGRESSIVE SERIES OF INSTRUCTIONS.
Narrative: I ASKED FOR PROGRESSIVE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS AT NEW, LA, AFTER RUN-UP. GND CTL TOLD ME TO TAXI 'STRAIGHT N' WHICH WOULD LEAD ME TO THE DEP END OF RWY 9. I TAXIED 360 DEGS AS PER DIRECTIONAL GYROSCOPE INDICATIONS AND ENDED UP MIDWAY DOWN RWY 9 ON THE TXWY. (I WAS ON THE APPROPRIATE SIDE OF THE HOLD SHORT MARKER AND NO RWY EXCURSION OCCURRED.) THE GND CTLRS HAD ME BACK TAXI ON RWY 9 TO THE DEP END. THE REASON THAT I DID NOT END UP INITIALLY AT THE TKOF END OF RWY 9 WAS BECAUSE I DID NOT RESET MY DIRECTIONAL GYROSCOPE DURING RUNUP AND WAS APPROX 70 DEGS OFF THE CORRECT COURSE WHILE TAXIING. BEFORE BACK- TAXIING, I DID RESET MY DIRECTIONAL GYROSCOPE TO COMPASS INDICATIONS.
