Narrative:
In was on 140 degrees bearing to frederick VOR at 5500 ft. I saw an aircraft 5 mi or more off my left front and above me. My daughter was my passenger. I began to explain to her a VOR. I again looked to my left and observed a jet. I pushed my nose over and leveled off at 5000 ft. When I checked baltimore altitude setting I was closer to 5700 ft than I was to 5500 ft. I was, I feel, closer than 1000 ft to this jet. I believe resetting my altitude sooner would have given me more clearance from this traffic.

Narrative: IN WAS ON 140 DEGS BEARING TO FREDERICK VOR AT 5500 FT. I SAW AN ACFT 5 MI OR MORE OFF MY L FRONT AND ABOVE ME. MY DAUGHTER WAS MY PAX. I BEGAN TO EXPLAIN TO HER A VOR. I AGAIN LOOKED TO MY L AND OBSERVED A JET. I PUSHED MY NOSE OVER AND LEVELED OFF AT 5000 FT. WHEN I CHKED BALTIMORE ALT SETTING I WAS CLOSER TO 5700 FT THAN I WAS TO 5500 FT. I WAS, I FEEL, CLOSER THAN 1000 FT TO THIS JET. I BELIEVE RESETTING MY ALT SOONER WOULD HAVE GIVEN ME MORE CLRNC FROM THIS TFC.
