Narrative:

We pushed back from gate and started engines. We were about 2-3 aircraft lengths from taxiway 'a.' the runway in use was runway 25. It has no parallel taxiway and it is necessary to back taxi on runway 25 to the end of the runway. We were cleared 'taxi runway 25 by taxiway alpha. We taxied forward, cleared the runway for traffic and turned left on to runway 25 at taxiway 'a.' as we did we were informed that we had not been cleared on to the runway. I asked if we should clear the runway and we were told to continue to the end. There was no traffic conflict. I feel that language was a contributor to this situation along with the proximity of the taxiway (a). I flew this same sequence on another day in mar/xx/95 and was especially interested in the phraseology used by the controller. On this occasion he said: 'taxi runway 25 - hold short at alpha.' I think this should prevent any future reoccurrence.

Narrative: WE PUSHED BACK FROM GATE AND STARTED ENGS. WE WERE ABOUT 2-3 ACFT LENGTHS FROM TXWY 'A.' THE RWY IN USE WAS RWY 25. IT HAS NO PARALLEL TXWY AND IT IS NECESSARY TO BACK TAXI ON RWY 25 TO THE END OF THE RWY. WE WERE CLRED 'TAXI RWY 25 BY TXWY ALPHA. WE TAXIED FORWARD, CLRED THE RWY FOR TFC AND TURNED L ON TO RWY 25 AT TXWY 'A.' AS WE DID WE WERE INFORMED THAT WE HAD NOT BEEN CLRED ON TO THE RWY. I ASKED IF WE SHOULD CLR THE RWY AND WE WERE TOLD TO CONTINUE TO THE END. THERE WAS NO TFC CONFLICT. I FEEL THAT LANGUAGE WAS A CONTRIBUTOR TO THIS SIT ALONG WITH THE PROX OF THE TXWY (A). I FLEW THIS SAME SEQUENCE ON ANOTHER DAY IN MAR/XX/95 AND WAS ESPECIALLY INTERESTED IN THE PHRASEOLOGY USED BY THE CTLR. ON THIS OCCASION HE SAID: 'TAXI RWY 25 - HOLD SHORT AT ALPHA.' I THINK THIS SHOULD PREVENT ANY FUTURE REOCCURRENCE.
