Narrative:
Given standard taxi instructions from ramp to runway 22R. 'Right inner-alpha-X-ray-22R.' upon crossing runway 13L we noted that alpha leading to x-ray was closed. We opted for alpha alpha - x-ray and found ourselves on x-ray which we found to be closed. Ground control called port authority/authorized which removed closure cones and allowed us to pass. We queried ground as to original taxi instructions and ground control stated that original instructions were 'right inner-bravo-X-ray-22R.' we (first officer and myself) recall hearing 'right-inner-alpha-X-ray.' we believe controller was originally mistaken in issuing instructions and we erred in choosing alpha-alpha when we found alpha closed without inquiry or clarification. The taxiway closure was not reflected on the ATIS or NOTAMS at the time.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: TXWY EXCURSION. FLC CONFUSED INSTRUCTIONS.
Narrative: GIVEN STANDARD TAXI INSTRUCTIONS FROM RAMP TO RWY 22R. 'R INNER-ALPHA-X-RAY-22R.' UPON XING RWY 13L WE NOTED THAT ALPHA LEADING TO X-RAY WAS CLOSED. WE OPTED FOR ALPHA ALPHA - X-RAY AND FOUND OURSELVES ON X-RAY WHICH WE FOUND TO BE CLOSED. GND CTL CALLED PORT AUTH WHICH REMOVED CLOSURE CONES AND ALLOWED US TO PASS. WE QUERIED GND AS TO ORIGINAL TAXI INSTRUCTIONS AND GND CTL STATED THAT ORIGINAL INSTRUCTIONS WERE 'R INNER-BRAVO-X-RAY-22R.' WE (FO AND MYSELF) RECALL HEARING 'R-INNER-ALPHA-X-RAY.' WE BELIEVE CTLR WAS ORIGINALLY MISTAKEN IN ISSUING INSTRUCTIONS AND WE ERRED IN CHOOSING ALPHA-ALPHA WHEN WE FOUND ALPHA CLOSED WITHOUT INQUIRY OR CLARIFICATION. THE TXWY CLOSURE WAS NOT REFLECTED ON THE ATIS OR NOTAMS AT THE TIME.
