Narrative:
On night landing at ord runway 27L we were instructed to contact tower at willt OM. On contact frequency 120.75 tower cleared us to land, hold short for landing traffic. Due to conditions and weight I stated cleared to land but we needed the whole length. With no tower reply I assumed they accepted our intentions to use full length and landing was flown accordingly. On short final we heard tower tell another aircraft that traffic on runway 27L would land and hold short. With no time to confirm what our instructions were, we decided to take the hold short and made an unnecessarily abrupt stop to assure we did not roll out too far. Due to the communications mix-up we did not roger hold short as per company regulations and did not brief required items of a land and hold short.
