Narrative:
Performing the missed approach procedure from casa grande ILS DME runway 5 our aircraft, a be-76, came within an unsafe proximity to another aircraft, possibly a beech baron. The other aircraft was a small aircraft (approximately 4 seater, less than 5000 pounds). I was flying by reference only to the instruments and was wearing a vision limiting device (hood). When we reached 3500 ft my instructor saw the other aircraft at our altitude and told me to continue the climb up to 4000 ft MSL. The conflicting traffic was at our altitude and heading the same direction at approximately the same airspeed. We then switched from the casa grande advisory frequency 122.7, to ZAB, 125.4, center requested our current altitude and the reason for the deviation. My instructor informed center of the conflicting traffic. Center informed us, rather rudely, that we were to fly the procedure as indicated in the charts, 3500 ft not 4000 ft. Apparently the area of stanfield VOR and casa grande is very busy with training aircraft, with conflicting IFR and VFR traffic performing the same maneuvers. Had my instructor not seen the other aircraft a midair collision was very possible.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SMA X ON VFR MISSED APCH HAD NMAC WITH ANOTHER ACFT. EVASIVE ACTION TAKEN. SEE AND AVOID CONCEPT.
Narrative: PERFORMING THE MISSED APCH PROC FROM CASA GRANDE ILS DME RWY 5 OUR ACFT, A BE-76, CAME WITHIN AN UNSAFE PROX TO ANOTHER ACFT, POSSIBLY A BEECH BARON. THE OTHER ACFT WAS A SMALL ACFT (APPROX 4 SEATER, LESS THAN 5000 LBS). I WAS FLYING BY REF ONLY TO THE INSTRUMENTS AND WAS WEARING A VISION LIMITING DEVICE (HOOD). WHEN WE REACHED 3500 FT MY INSTRUCTOR SAW THE OTHER ACFT AT OUR ALT AND TOLD ME TO CONTINUE THE CLB UP TO 4000 FT MSL. THE CONFLICTING TFC WAS AT OUR ALT AND HDG THE SAME DIRECTION AT APPROX THE SAME AIRSPD. WE THEN SWITCHED FROM THE CASA GRANDE ADVISORY FREQ 122.7, TO ZAB, 125.4, CTR REQUESTED OUR CURRENT ALT AND THE REASON FOR THE DEV. MY INSTRUCTOR INFORMED CTR OF THE CONFLICTING TFC. CTR INFORMED US, RATHER RUDELY, THAT WE WERE TO FLY THE PROC AS INDICATED IN THE CHARTS, 3500 FT NOT 4000 FT. APPARENTLY THE AREA OF STANFIELD VOR AND CASA GRANDE IS VERY BUSY WITH TRAINING ACFT, WITH CONFLICTING IFR AND VFR TFC PERFORMING THE SAME MANEUVERS. HAD MY INSTRUCTOR NOT SEEN THE OTHER ACFT A MIDAIR COLLISION WAS VERY POSSIBLE.
