Narrative:
During approach into atl for runway 9R we were cleared to descend to 6000 ft and on a 060 degree heading to intercept final. Passing through 8000 ft atl approach called traffic at our 1-2 O'clock climbing through 6000 ft approximately 3 mi. Our TCASII was inoperative. We immediately acquired the traffic and determined ourselves to be on a direct collision course so we took immediate evasive action by banking 45 degrees to the right and initiating a climb. We cleared the conflict by less than 1 mi and 300 ft vertically. Evidently the traffic was not under ATC control and our controller had just picked him up on his radar. We do not believe the conflict ever saw us. Our evasive maneuver was smooth and all passenger had been seated so there was no injuries. An uneventful landing was made on runway 9R.

Title: VISUAL CONTACT OF ENCROACHING TFC AND FLC TOOK EVASIVE ACTION.
Narrative: DURING APCH INTO ATL FOR RWY 9R WE WERE CLRED TO DSND TO 6000 FT AND ON A 060 DEG HDG TO INTERCEPT FINAL. PASSING THROUGH 8000 FT ATL APCH CALLED TFC AT OUR 1-2 O'CLOCK CLBING THROUGH 6000 FT APPROX 3 MI. OUR TCASII WAS INOP. WE IMMEDIATELY ACQUIRED THE TFC AND DETERMINED OURSELVES TO BE ON A DIRECT COLLISION COURSE SO WE TOOK IMMEDIATE EVASIVE ACTION BY BANKING 45 DEGS TO THE R AND INITIATING A CLB. WE CLRED THE CONFLICT BY LESS THAN 1 MI AND 300 FT VERTLY. EVIDENTLY THE TFC WAS NOT UNDER ATC CTL AND OUR CTLR HAD JUST PICKED HIM UP ON HIS RADAR. WE DO NOT BELIEVE THE CONFLICT EVER SAW US. OUR EVASIVE MANEUVER WAS SMOOTH AND ALL PAX HAD BEEN SEATED SO THERE WAS NO INJURIES. AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG WAS MADE ON RWY 9R.
