Narrative:
Flying inbound to flm VOR at 16000 ft. ZID gave us pilot's discretion to 11000 ft. At the same time they gave us a lower altimeter setting. The first officer was flying and he reset his altimeter and used the autoplt vertical mode to ascend again to 16000 ft exactly. Prior to this the altitude preselect was set to 11000 ft for pilot's discretion. We were approximately 50-60 ft low prior to resetting altimeters. The altitude alerter did not chime as we passed through 16000 ft ascending. (Maybe we didn't hear it.) we realized what had happened as we were climbing through 16800 ft. We immediately started our descent back to 16000 ft. Center called and asked us to verify our altitude and I told them we were descending through 16200 ft. I believe crew fatigue contributed to this altitude deviation. It was our last leg on a 2 day trip, the 5TH leg of the day. It was my 6TH day in a row, I had flown about 30 in 7. I believe my first officer was tired although he didn't indicate this to me.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ALTDEV ALT EXCURSION. FLC SETS THE NEW ALT IN THE ALERTER THEN ADJUSTS THE CRUISE ALT BY USE OF THE VERT SPD MODE AND CLBS ABOVE THE ASSIGNED ALT.
Narrative: FLYING INBOUND TO FLM VOR AT 16000 FT. ZID GAVE US PLT'S DISCRETION TO 11000 FT. AT THE SAME TIME THEY GAVE US A LOWER ALTIMETER SETTING. THE FO WAS FLYING AND HE RESET HIS ALTIMETER AND USED THE AUTOPLT VERT MODE TO ASCEND AGAIN TO 16000 FT EXACTLY. PRIOR TO THIS THE ALT PRESELECT WAS SET TO 11000 FT FOR PLT'S DISCRETION. WE WERE APPROX 50-60 FT LOW PRIOR TO RESETTING ALTIMETERS. THE ALT ALERTER DID NOT CHIME AS WE PASSED THROUGH 16000 FT ASCENDING. (MAYBE WE DIDN'T HEAR IT.) WE REALIZED WHAT HAD HAPPENED AS WE WERE CLBING THROUGH 16800 FT. WE IMMEDIATELY STARTED OUR DSCNT BACK TO 16000 FT. CTR CALLED AND ASKED US TO VERIFY OUR ALT AND I TOLD THEM WE WERE DSNDING THROUGH 16200 FT. I BELIEVE CREW FATIGUE CONTRIBUTED TO THIS ALTDEV. IT WAS OUR LAST LEG ON A 2 DAY TRIP, THE 5TH LEG OF THE DAY. IT WAS MY 6TH DAY IN A ROW, I HAD FLOWN ABOUT 30 IN 7. I BELIEVE MY FO WAS TIRED ALTHOUGH HE DIDN'T INDICATE THIS TO ME.
