Narrative:
En route msy, rerted south of msy to lev direct tibby due to thunderstorms. Beyond lev on west course toward tibby, ATC stated intent send us to lft for sequencing msy. Thunderstorms between us and lft precluded direct lft. Fuel and direction of flight away from destination and alternate became a concern. Rejected clearance to lft and started south to east turn, informing ATC of my intent to turn eastbound away from WX and toward destination/alternate. ATC issued direction for westerly course approximately 3 times while we continued an eastbound turn, informing ATC of heading and progress. Established eastbound, requested clearance to bhm alternate unless more direct route to msy was available. Filing as soon as possible due to possible conflict with ATC over repeated rejection of ATC instruction to maintain west course. Never declared minimum fuel or emergency. However, without this action, either was possible result. Actual result was direct msy without further incident.

Title: DEV FROM CLRNC. ACR, WITHOUT DECLARING AN EMER, FLEW THEIR OWN RTE AROUND WX (KEEPING CTLR INFORMED) TOWARDS THEIR DEST.
Narrative: ENRTE MSY, RERTED S OF MSY TO LEV DIRECT TIBBY DUE TO TSTMS. BEYOND LEV ON W COURSE TOWARD TIBBY, ATC STATED INTENT SEND US TO LFT FOR SEQUENCING MSY. TSTMS BTWN US AND LFT PRECLUDED DIRECT LFT. FUEL AND DIRECTION OF FLT AWAY FROM DEST AND ALTERNATE BECAME A CONCERN. REJECTED CLRNC TO LFT AND STARTED S TO E TURN, INFORMING ATC OF MY INTENT TO TURN EBOUND AWAY FROM WX AND TOWARD DEST/ALTERNATE. ATC ISSUED DIRECTION FOR WESTERLY COURSE APPROX 3 TIMES WHILE WE CONTINUED AN EBOUND TURN, INFORMING ATC OF HDG AND PROGRESS. ESTABLISHED EBOUND, REQUESTED CLRNC TO BHM ALTERNATE UNLESS MORE DIRECT RTE TO MSY WAS AVAILABLE. FILING ASAP DUE TO POSSIBLE CONFLICT WITH ATC OVER REPEATED REJECTION OF ATC INSTRUCTION TO MAINTAIN W COURSE. NEVER DECLARED MINIMUM FUEL OR EMER. HOWEVER, WITHOUT THIS ACTION, EITHER WAS POSSIBLE RESULT. ACTUAL RESULT WAS DIRECT MSY WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.
