Controller questioned our altitude while at 4000 ft. He said we showed 5000 ft, we switched encoders and showed level at 4000 ft. No conflicts or anything occurred. Wrote malfunction up in maintenance discrepancy log.

Title: ATC QUESTIONED LTT FLC ABOUT THEIR ASSIGNED ALT AND FOUND THAT ACFT WAS XMITTING THE WRONG ALT FROM THE ACFT XPONDER ENCODING ALTIMETER.
Narrative: CTLR QUESTIONED OUR ALT WHILE AT 4000 FT. HE SAID WE SHOWED 5000 FT, WE SWITCHED ENCODERS AND SHOWED LEVEL AT 4000 FT. NO CONFLICTS OR ANYTHING OCCURRED. WROTE MALFUNCTION UP IN MAINT DISCREPANCY LOG.
