Narrative:
During preflight, first officer (reporter) inadvertently preloaded clt-dca into FMS. Our scheduled route was clt-rdu, then a flight from rdu-dca. Our filed route was for a lills departure from clt. During climb out, the captain (PF) noted the nearly 90 degree intercept angle on the navigation display (which showed clt to meril intersection instead of clt to lills, about 20 radials apart) at about the time we were intercepting the meril transition, we switched to ZTL I reported on frequency as joining the meril transition. Approximately 1 min later, we were cleared direct buzzy and the buzzy 5 arrival to rdu. We both noticed that our navigation display showed the route of flight continuing past rdu to dca (our second leg). The ATC controllers (atl and washington) did not query us when I checked on frequency as intercepting the meril transition, and we immediately complied with his new clearance anyway to buzzy intersection. But we had turned from clt departure control's heading during the radio handoff. TCASII showed no other known aircraft in the area. In the chocks, both crewmembers draw up navigation page on FMS and verify route as it appears loaded into the navigation equipment, the preflight brief in our case did not stop us from initiating a turn eastbound too early.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FO PROGRAMMED THE WRONG RTE INTO THE FMC RESULTING IN THE FLC FLYING THE WRONG RTE ON DEP.
Narrative: DURING PREFLT, FO (RPTR) INADVERTENTLY PRELOADED CLT-DCA INTO FMS. OUR SCHEDULED RTE WAS CLT-RDU, THEN A FLT FROM RDU-DCA. OUR FILED RTE WAS FOR A LILLS DEP FROM CLT. DURING CLBOUT, THE CAPT (PF) NOTED THE NEARLY 90 DEG INTERCEPT ANGLE ON THE NAV DISPLAY (WHICH SHOWED CLT TO MERIL INTXN INSTEAD OF CLT TO LILLS, ABOUT 20 RADIALS APART) AT ABOUT THE TIME WE WERE INTERCEPTING THE MERIL TRANSITION, WE SWITCHED TO ZTL I RPTED ON FREQ AS JOINING THE MERIL TRANSITION. APPROX 1 MIN LATER, WE WERE CLRED DIRECT BUZZY AND THE BUZZY 5 ARR TO RDU. WE BOTH NOTICED THAT OUR NAV DISPLAY SHOWED THE RTE OF FLT CONTINUING PAST RDU TO DCA (OUR SECOND LEG). THE ATC CTLRS (ATL AND WASHINGTON) DID NOT QUERY US WHEN I CHKED ON FREQ AS INTERCEPTING THE MERIL TRANSITION, AND WE IMMEDIATELY COMPLIED WITH HIS NEW CLRNC ANYWAY TO BUZZY INTXN. BUT WE HAD TURNED FROM CLT DEP CTL'S HDG DURING THE RADIO HDOF. TCASII SHOWED NO OTHER KNOWN ACFT IN THE AREA. IN THE CHOCKS, BOTH CREWMEMBERS DRAW UP NAV PAGE ON FMS AND VERIFY RTE AS IT APPEARS LOADED INTO THE NAV EQUIP, THE PREFLT BRIEF IN OUR CASE DID NOT STOP US FROM INITIATING A TURN EBOUND TOO EARLY.
