Narrative:

The charlotte final controller instructed us to turn from a heading of 080 degree to a heading of 025 degree to join the runway 36L ILS approach. My first officer, PF, had inadvertently turned off her communication #1 and communication #2 receivers and did not hear this clearance. After realizing this I took control of the airplane and attempted to capture the localizer. The clearance was issued late and I simply could not turn tight enough to keep from flying through the localizer. We were broken off the approach, were re- vectored and landed a short time later without incident. The first officer is new with the company and may not have been as situationally aware as she could be. I probably should have paid closer attention to her actions in the terminal area.
