Narrative:
ATC requested climb to FL370 from FL330 for traffic separation. After climb began ATC requested approximately 90 degree left turn and then best rate of climb. After completion of turn ATC requested approximately 180 degree right turn for traffic and queried flight as to climb rate. ATC appeared very concerned with separation. Apparently not aware that climb rate would be compromised during turns. Either maneuver alone would have been adequate, but while turning aircraft unable to climb and while climbing unable to use high bank angles for turn due to lower speeds.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ATC REQUESTED CLB PLUS 2 TURNS APPARENTLY FOR TFC SEPARATION.
Narrative: ATC REQUESTED CLB TO FL370 FROM FL330 FOR TFC SEPARATION. AFTER CLB BEGAN ATC REQUESTED APPROX 90 DEG L TURN AND THEN BEST RATE OF CLB. AFTER COMPLETION OF TURN ATC REQUESTED APPROX 180 DEG R TURN FOR TFC AND QUERIED FLT AS TO CLB RATE. ATC APPEARED VERY CONCERNED WITH SEPARATION. APPARENTLY NOT AWARE THAT CLB RATE WOULD BE COMPROMISED DURING TURNS. EITHER MANEUVER ALONE WOULD HAVE BEEN ADEQUATE, BUT WHILE TURNING ACFT UNABLE TO CLB AND WHILE CLBING UNABLE TO USE HIGH BANK ANGLES FOR TURN DUE TO LOWER SPDS.
