Narrative:
Cleared for visual approach into lga behind a corporate aircraft flying the expressway visual approach to runway 31 at lga. Called traffic in sight, then I turned downwind behind the traffic. ATC asked to confirm aircraft we were following, and at that point saw another corporate jet over the maspeth tanks, approximately 1 - 1 1/2 mi behind us. This was the correct aircraft ATC wanted us to follow. We stopped the descent, slowed the aircraft, and allowed the hawker to overtake us and pass underneath. Once adequate separation was established, continued the visual approach without incident.

Title: NMAC, OR AT LEAST LTSS, IN THE LGA VISUAL APCH PATTERN.
Narrative: CLRED FOR VISUAL APCH INTO LGA BEHIND A CORPORATE ACFT FLYING THE EXPRESSWAY VISUAL APCH TO RWY 31 AT LGA. CALLED TFC IN SIGHT, THEN I TURNED DOWNWIND BEHIND THE TFC. ATC ASKED TO CONFIRM ACFT WE WERE FOLLOWING, AND AT THAT POINT SAW ANOTHER CORPORATE JET OVER THE MASPETH TANKS, APPROX 1 - 1 1/2 MI BEHIND US. THIS WAS THE CORRECT ACFT ATC WANTED US TO FOLLOW. WE STOPPED THE DSCNT, SLOWED THE ACFT, AND ALLOWED THE HAWKER TO OVERTAKE US AND PASS UNDERNEATH. ONCE ADEQUATE SEPARATION WAS ESTABLISHED, CONTINUED THE VISUAL APCH WITHOUT INCIDENT.
