Narrative:
ZNY cleared our flight from 17000 ft to FL230 and then gave frequency change. We came up on next center frequency 'climbing to FL230.' center: 'are you maintaining 17000 ft.' aircraft: 'negative, climbing to FL230.' center: 'maintain FL180.' aircraft: 'roger, maintain FL180.' we had to descend back to FL180 from approximately FL195. Before we left this frequency I inquired if he knew the previous controller had cleared us to FL230. All I heard was a microphone click carrier.

Title: ATC INTRACOORD. ALT CLRNCS NOT COORDINATED.
Narrative: ZNY CLRED OUR FLT FROM 17000 FT TO FL230 AND THEN GAVE FREQ CHANGE. WE CAME UP ON NEXT CTR FREQ 'CLBING TO FL230.' CTR: 'ARE YOU MAINTAINING 17000 FT.' ACFT: 'NEGATIVE, CLBING TO FL230.' CTR: 'MAINTAIN FL180.' ACFT: 'ROGER, MAINTAIN FL180.' WE HAD TO DSND BACK TO FL180 FROM APPROX FL195. BEFORE WE LEFT THIS FREQ I INQUIRED IF HE KNEW THE PREVIOUS CTLR HAD CLRED US TO FL230. ALL I HEARD WAS A MIKE CLICK CARRIER.
